The word “stay” has deep historical roots tied to stillness, support, and endurance. In modern use, it means to remain in a place, often temporarily, as in “stay at a hotel.” It comes from Middle English staien, influenced by Old French estai or estayer (support or foundation), which trace back to Latin stare, meaning “to stand.” This root also gave rise to words like “stability,” “stance,” and “state.”

While “stay” once implied firmness and permanence, today it often suggests something brief — a pause in movement. Yet older meanings persist in contexts like legal “stays” (delays) or the “stays” in fashion and sailing that offer structural support. In contrast to “travel,” which comes from roots linked to struggle and toil, “stay” symbolizes rest, grounding, and refuge. For hospitality brands like KL Short Stay, it suggests more than lodging — it offers a moment of calm and support amid life’s constant motion.
